Alloy Project
Midway through the year we were given the task to research various alloys. We researched the basic characteristics of 5+ alloys by ourselves. We then did various worksheets that would give us common knowledge going ahead with the project. I was then assigned to a team with two other people. Our team then had to choose one of the alloys that we obtained background information on. Our team decided upon the alloy Ti-6Al-7Nb the alloy is titanium based with smaller amounts of aluminum and niobium. Our particular alloy has many different uses but the product that pertained to our alloy was a hip prosthesis. The component of the hip prosthesis that we researched was the femoral stem. This is the component that is inserted into your femur after they drill a hole into it. The femoral implant is made out of our alloy. After we chose the alloy and the product that it was used for we had to massive amounts of researching through books, articles, websites and instructors. We had to find various things that had to do with our alloy. Throughout the whole process we had the help of a professional metallurgist. Mr. Kelto helped every team tremendously he also instructed us through labs that had to do with rockwell, brinell, knoop and vickers testing. These are all tests that measure a hardness of a material. After this very long process we presented to our instructor, Mr. Kelto and an interested audience made up of our peers.
Skills and Objectives
English Skills:
Chemistry Skills:
- Compose written and spoken essays or work-related text that demonstrate logical thinking and the development of ideas for academic, creative, and personal purposes: essays that convey the author’s message by using an engaging introduction (with a clear thesis as appropriate), well-constructed paragraphs, transition sentences, and a powerful conclusion.
- Develop and extend a thesis, argument, or exploration of a topic by analyzing differing perspectives and employing a structure that effectively conveys the ideas in writing (e.g. resolve inconsistencies in logic; use a range of strategies to persuade, clarify, and defend a position with precise and relevant evidence; anticipate and address concerns and counterclaims; provide a clear and effective conclusion).
- Evaluate own and others’ effectiveness in group discussions and formal presentations (e.g., considering accuracy, relevance, clarity, and delivery; types of arguments used; and relationships among purpose, audience, and content).
- Identify, explore, and refine topics and questions appropriate for research.
- Prepare spoken and multimedia presentations that effectively address audiences by careful use of voice, pacing, gestures, eye contact, visual aids, audio and video technology.
Chemistry Skills:
- Definitions of mass, length, volume and temp.
- Metric Conversions.
- Conversions between metric and English.
- Definition of density
- Formula D=M/V
- Define an ion (cation and anion)
- Calculate # of p+, e-, and n for ions of elements
- Describe a solid according to the K.T.
- Explain the melting point/freezing point
- Describe crystalline solids
- Describe amorphous solids
- Explain allotropes
- Model the valence e- of metal atoms Describe the arrangement of atoms in a metal
- Recognize body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic, and hexagonal close-packed arrangements
- Explain the importance of alloys
- Understand how chemistry is related to metallurgy
- Define chemical terms such as element, atom, compound, molecule, & solutions
- Define "heat treating" and explain its importance
Justification
This project literally made me want to pull my hair out, but I persevered. This project spanned a long period of time there were times when teammates did not see eye to eye. Their were also times where some people had more work than others. The thing I liked about this project was that it was a team effort. This would have been impossible with the time we were allocated to finish the amount of work that needed to be done by one person. This tested our planning and researching skills to the point where I haven't ever been stretched to before. I was ready to smash my keyboard at times trying to find small pieces of information that I just couldn't find. I scoured the web looking for information. I also called a company who couldn't give me any insight to what I was having problems with. The morale of the story is that this project built character and taught me to persevere through things I normally would have quit trying to accomplish. This project really taught me a lot about myself and what I can achieve working in a team. For this reason I have included this in my portfolio.
